Default I am planning to do a 5K run in July of this year

I am planning to do a 5K run in July of this year, and am looking for a good training plan. I am a 34 yr old male. Back when I was 22 and in good shape I did a 5K in under 26 minutes. When I was 30 and in average shape I did one in just over 27 minutes. In the past few years however, I got out of shape, and in October I learned I had high cholesterol and borderline blood sugar issues so it scared the heck out of me to get back in shape. In the last few months I have lost 15 lbs, and would like to lose another 10. The 5K in July is a good motivator for me. I'd like to beat my time of 26 minutes from 12 yrs ago.So, I'm wondering if someone could suggest a training plan. Currently I run about 4 miles 2-3 times a week, and do the eliptical for another 1-2 times a week. I also do weight training 2-3 times a week. I have been running on a treadmill at about a 10-11 minute mile pace on a 1% incline. Should I start to switch it up with some long distance and sprint days?

You're right on the money. Tossing in a sprinkling of sprints and longer duration will improve your endurance and strength for racing. Also occasionally increasing the incline and speed of your treadmill runs will help too. If your training is harder than anything you'll hit on the road, it'll be a breeze.
